The Statue Of Liberty In New York - An International Icon And Thus An Ideal Destination For All Those Traveling To America

The Statue of Liberty, is a statue given by France to Americans in the latter part of the nineteenth century, situated at Liberty Island in the mouth of the Hudson River within New York Harbour. It is one of the most well-known icons of the U.S. It symbolises liberty as well as the escape from oppression.

Dedicated October 28, 1886, the copper clad statue was presented by France and honours the centennial of U.S.. Meant as a mark of friendship between both nations. Auguste Barthol is the sculptor for which he had a live American model, Isabella Eugenie Boyer, the wife of Isaac Singer, the sewing-machine entrepreneur while Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, was the engineer of the innermost support structure.

Even thinking about providing a gigantic representation of republican virtues to a "sister" republic across the world acted as a focal point for the republican opposition to other political opponents. A torch held aloft in her right hand and a tablet in her left are held by Lady Liberty. JULY IV MDCCLXXVI July 4, 1776 that is the date of the acceptance of the Declaration of Independence is displayed on the tablet. One of her feet stands upon chains. The 7 spikes in the crown represent the seven seas or 7 continents.

It was organised that the American people were to construct the pedestal, and the French people were to construct the actual statue and the set up in the US. Public fees, numerous forms of entertainment, and a lottery were among the means employed to raise the 2,250,000 francs in France. While in America, profit theatrical events, fine art exhibitions, public sales and prize fights assisted in providing necessary capital

Led by William M. Evarts, fundraising regarding the pedestal was progressing slowly. Seeking to help, Joseph Pulitzer opened up the editorial pages of his newspaper, "The World", to assist the fund raising efforts. Pulitzer condemned both the wealthy and the middle classes for their apathy and lack of action; his editorial campaign of criticism was effective in inspiring the people of America to donate.

It was July 1884 before the statue was finished in France and on June 17, 1885 it sailed into New York Harbour aboard the French frigate Isere. The Statue was installed on her new pedestal over 4 months. On October 28, 1886, the dedication of the Statue of Liberty by United States President Grover Cleveland took place in front of a large number of addressees. She was a centennial gift 10 years belated.

Because National Park Service handled all historic areas, on October 15, 1966, the Statue of Liberty National Monument, along with Ellis Island and Liberty Island, were shown on the National Register of Historic Locations

In 1984, the Statue of Liberty was included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's listing of World Heritage Sites. It is one of four existing man-made sites in the United States to be referred to as such, the others are Independence Hall, Pueblo de Taos, along with the combined site of the University of Virginia and Monticello.

Through September 11, 2001 to August 3, 2004, the actual statue and island were closed to strengthen the security following the destruction of the World Trade Centre. Entry was restricted and may still be as you read this. The museum as well as the ten-story pedestal are available for visitation. The interior of the statue was also closed, though a window ceiling in the pedestal allows visitors to view the iron framework.
