The Statue of Liberty, is a statue given by France to Americans in the latter part of the nineteenth century, situated at Liberty Island in the mouth of the Hudson River within New York Harbour. In 1984, the Statue of Liberty was included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's listing of World Heritage Sites. It is one of four existing man-made sites in the United States to be referred to as such, the others are Independence Hall, Pueblo de Taos, along with the combined site of the University of Virginia and Monticello.

Through September 11, 2001 to August 3, 2004, the actual statue and island were closed to strengthen the security following the destruction of the World Trade Centre. Entry was restricted and may still be as you read this. The museum as well as the ten-story pedestal are available for visitation. The interior of the statue was also closed, though a window ceiling in the pedestal allows visitors to view the iron framework.
