Solar Power Electricity - Accepted By Governments Worldwide

Solar power electricity is only one of several solutions that are used to produce electrical energy. Experts are convinced that solar power can potentially supply many, many times the entire world energy demands.

Most of us take the supply of electrical energy for granted. We are contented to merely connect our heaters, cookers, fridges, computers and televisions in to the electric sockets that are located conveniently in the walls of our homes.

Most people assume that their electric power comes through the electrical power grid from a power plant that is located somewhere not far from where we live and then pay the utility company for their own monthly usage. And that is the end of it.

However there are different types of energy plants producing the electricity that is contributing to the grid for our use. There are hydroelectric power plants which make electricity by utilizing the power of water, nuclear power plants that control the power of the atom, coal power plants that use our ever dwindling non-renewable fuels and wind farm power plants utilizing the power of the wind to create electricity.

These all have the disadvantage of being costly to construct, have high maintenance costs and their fuel costs are exorbitant.

Solar energy plants are springing up all over the world as various techniques are discovered for harnessing the power of the sun to generate electricity. Governments are pumping millions of dollars into solar plants testing equipment and materials to enable them to add storage for the electricity that they produce.

solar power electricity falls into the two common categories of terrestrial solar energy and space-based solar power.

Solar power panels use a photovoltaic cell to convert light in to an electrical current. This is probably the process that we are mainly familiar with as it is these solar power panels that are used for generating electricity in the home. This technique has also been widely used in power plants around the world. There are several types of photovoltaic cells which are being tested and manufactured including thin film, monocrystalline and also polychrystalline silicon.

Concentrating solar power is a method of using the suns heat to create steam which drives an electricity turbine. Mirrors which trail the sun are used to focus a considerable area of sun rays into a small beam that is then directed at a tower which then heats up a liquid in the conventional way. Again various methods and types of mirrors are being tested in this area.

Space-based solar power would use a satellite to gather energy, transform it into electrical power and transmit it to earth. This is still very much in the experimental phase but in the near future we will be using electricity which has been beamed down to earth simply by wireless power transmission by using a microwave beam. There are many justifications for using a space based solar power system instead of a terrestrial not least since they would be not dependent on varying weather conditions.

Governments are investing heavily in solar power plants as an alternative method of generating electricity. They are pumping huge sums of money into the development of discovering improved ways for holding the electrical energy.

This might all seem to be happening on somewhat grand scale where we see a solar energy plant with many acres of mirrors and solar panels collecting and directing the suns heat to generate energy. Yet at the same time governments all over the world are providing a selection of grants, tax savings and other incentives to homeowners who want to construct their own small scale solar power electricity systems. In many instances it can be quite possible to sell any excess electricity that you are able to generate back to the utility company.
