If you own your own company, putting your kids to work in the household business makes tons of sense. Not only are kids exempt from some of the labor and tax laws when working for a family owned business in many areas, but giving the kids a feeling of ownership could take them a long way when the family business goes to their hands some day.

Keep in mind your kid's age as you start to work them in the household business. Even little children can take part doing simple jobs such as copying papers. As they get older, kids can sort papers, file, assist in preparing shipments, keep track of credit, send faxes and more.

Be tolerant as they learn and explain jobs clearly. You understand your kid better than everyone else, so think about whether he or she could follow multiple directions at once, or if one job assigned at one time is a better idea. If your kid can read well, let that kid handle more complicated tasks and leave the simpler jobs to a younger kid.

While employing your kids can in the end save you money, be sure you pay them a decent wage for the job they perform. Help your children to keep some of what they earn and give some of what they make to a charity. But allow them to have at least a little of the cash they've earned to spend whatever way they choose. This gives children a stronger want to work and a smaller want to survive off of credit. We all need rewards, but kids especially have a need for at least some instant gratification.

Be tolerant and realize that children are just children. There may be times when you have a deadline to meet and your child just wants to have fun. Or there may be times when you just can not get your children to focus. On these days, do your best to remind them of the project at hand and that there is a job to be done first. Once the job is done, take time to play, and chill out and enjoy your kids. They have to know you're a parent first, and a boss second.

Use work time to help your kids learn the joy of making some money, and the requirement and mechanics of personal finance. Also, help them to become dependable employees, cultivate a strong work ethic, and know the importance of a project well done.

Enabling your children to work in the household business may assist you, as a sole entrepreneur, find help you want to complete necessary tasks. But, it should also give your kids an example of the workplace and assist them in understanding the importance of personal finance. This way when they get older, they will stay clear from debt and credit problems. That is a much simpler thing to learn when cash is earned rather than given.
