It is only as we become old that we really learn to appreciate our senses, it is usually around the time that we start getting short sighted or hard of hearing. This is precisely why young workers sometimes have to be forced to wear the things they do not like, it is the only way to guarantee ear protection and bodily safety.
It isn't that long ago that safety in the workplace was merely neglected. There were few laws about how laborers were taken care of and if someone lost a finger, or even worse, there was always somebody to replace them. As laws guaranteeing the safety for workers have increased so the wearing of protective ear muffs in loud environments and bright orange or yellowish jackets have become the norm in any place where forklifts and lorries move around among workers.
It doesn't take very long for a loud repetitive noise to do long term hearing damage, the actual concern is that the hearing damage may not become obvious for months or maybe years. Obviously once someone prefers to not wear their high visibility best and then gets run over by a forklift it is a lot more serious.
The saddest thing I have observed in factories is that it is not until someone who works there gets wounded that many people begin to take the safety measures seriously. Waiting till it is too late is not the right way to guard your hearing, or your body.
