A new lumbar support seating system created for underground mine employees working loaders and haul trucks is resulting in reduced injuries and tiredness.

Perth-based Modern Motor Trimmers (MMT), which specialises in suspension seats and seating items to the mining sector, has spent over five years developing the pneumatically-operated double air lumbar seat support.

The two-stage lumbar support system is integrated into the backrest of the premium-quality T back seats. This uses the air supply from the seat's built-in air compressor or the machine's air supply to fully inflate, supporting the operator's lumbar region and building a buffer against shock and jarring.

MMT is installing the lumbar system into the premium quality ISRI seating variety, at present the sole product on the market to have an adjustable back rest that could be angled for increased operator comfort and support.

Managing Director Garry Spouge, who founded MMT in 1992, said the company had refined and began to provide the innovative seating product in the last 12 months, as demand for safer and much more comfortable seating technology in the underground mining sector grown.

"Safety is the main priority for those mining businesses around Australia, and that obviously includes employee safety and wellbeing, that was the starting point for us in terms of developing this lumbar support system," Mr Spouge said.

"Sore backs are the most typical reasons for lost time injuries in the workplace, as well as our lower back support design targets this, preventing back accidental injuries and eventually on-the-job tiredness."

Mr Spouge said that MMT had previously researched and made a similar T backed seats for underground mining equipment, but the prototype didn't provide a flexible lumbar support.

"We're really pleased with our most recent design and already the feedback we've gained is that it is minimizing injuries and fatigue.

"And as well as increasing operator comfort and basic safety, it also improves seat life through reducing deterioration and encouraging proper posture," he added

MMT's core market is the supply, installation and repair of premium suspension seats and seating products to the mining, building, construction, engineering and transport sectors.

The company is Western Australia's only authorized provider and repairer for German manufacturer ISRI, which can be widely recognized as the manufacturer of the world's most advanced driver and passenger seating products.
