Iridium is probably the most popular, or rather notorious, of the satellite services offered. They were bankrupt in 1990 and known to public; a year after the system was presented. However, Motorola Inc. walked in and resolved their financial obligations. Iridium was re-launched in 2001 and was basically working since then.

Iridium's intention was to design a satellite service that would offer truly global network, a service that Inmarsat and Globalstar have not yet fulfilled. To acquire this the Iridium network uses 66 satellites, four hundred miles high, orbiting the globe on 6 various airplanes. Excursioning at 16,832 miles per hour, for each satellite is capable to orbit the globe every 100 minutes.

This layout ensures that an Iridium handset will be able to make and take calls from any place on the globe (the only exclusions to this regions who have rejected to back-up the service for political purposes). The main criticism that leveled at Iridium is the reality that they are restricted in their data and fax abilities. The service is available but not to the requirements that Inmarsat and Globalstar can give you.

Also, as discussed briefly in reference to Inmarsat's service, Iridium function a greater risk of reducing a reception once it has been sent. This occurs simply because they really rely on the passing of networks through a great number of satellites before routing them to their final destinations.
